“Toni Lance’s paintings demonstrate a reverence for the subject. The fine detail, coupled with closely cropped views, makes the viewer as intimately familiar with the subject as the artist. This could be because as the founder and director of the St. Croix Avian Sanctuary, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Toni Lance’s love of birds extends beyond the realm of art, and she can’t help but express it in her work.”

About Toni Lance
Compassion can take you by surprise. Toni Lance came to St. Croix as a young artist, expecting to discover and express the beauty of the island. She could not have anticipated the heart connection with the island’s birds that came into her life, and how many she would take under her wings.

The Story
An original score performed by Jacqueline Schwab brings this story to life. Capturing the emotion and feeling Toni experiences in her daily life, transforming her care for birds into an art itself. Jacqueline is a folk and classical improvisational pianist who plays “gorgeously spare piano” (The Boston Globe) yet “sounds as if she has an orchestra at her fingertips” (Sing Out). Chosen by the renowned Ken Burns for numerous public television documentaries due to the emotional expression in her playing, Jacqueline has performed on the soundtracks for the Grammy award-winning Civil War, the Emmy award-winning Baseball and Mark Twain, among others. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton in 1997 to celebrate Burns’ Lewis and Clark series and also at the Smithsonian in 2000 celebrate its exhibition on the Presidency. In May, 2009, she accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on the Late Show with David Letterman.
